A staff member for U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell in her Washington, D.C., office tested positive for the novel coronavirus and the office was closed for deep cleaning.

Cantwell herself was not at the Capitol, based on advice by the Office of the Attending Physician.

“Out of an abundance of caution, she is working from home,” her office reported.

Senators cannot vote remotely, however, so Cantwell was not able to vote on the confirmation of a new member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The staff member was put in isolation after starting to show symptoms of COVID-19, a statement from Cantwell’s office reported.

That person had no known contact with Cantwell or other members of Congress, the statement said, but staff in her Seattle and Washington, D.C., offices are currently working remotely as a precaution.

Cantwell is asking that any staff members who came in contact with the infected indivdual and show symptoms be tested.
