GSC Meals to bring 7 meals once a week

From staff and local reports

The Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels has begun delivering seven frozen meals one day per week to each recipient, the nonprofit announced Monday.

The group changed its daily hot meal deliveries after consulting with the Spokane Regional Health District. With an expected peak of coronavirus infections in the coming two or three weeks, the nonprofit said it was necessary to adopt a new schedule that requires fewer volunteers and lessen the risk of exposure.

In the effort to curtail the spread of COVID-19, the organization needs 1,300 nonsurgical face masks for its volunteers. Donations can be dropped off at its office at 12101 E. Sprague Ave. in Spokane Valley.

The nonprofit said it would accommodate persons with unique needs that the new schedule would not satisfy.

All seniors can continue to expect the deliveries, a news release said. Hot daily deliveries should restart in two to three weeks.

“We will continue to call all of our clients daily and check in with them. We encourage all Spokane County citizens to check in on their senior neighbors and loved ones during this time,” Janet Dixon, GSC Meals on Wheels director of development and communications, said in the release.

Those over the age of 60 can call (509) 924-6976 to enroll in the meal delivery program.

All Silver Cafe sites remain closed.
