Two residents of the Spokane Veterans Home have tested positive for COVID-19, the facility announced Tuesday night.

The positive results for the residents come a week after a Spokane Veterans Home health care worker tested positive for COVID-19. The employee resumed working at the facility after being tested on March 23 and going 72 hours without symptoms.

The employee had minimal contact with residents when they returned to work, according to the state Department of Veteran Affairs. But officials did not rule out a connection with the residents’ cases Tuesday night.

The residents, whose ages and genders were not disclosed, were roommates and isolated together when they started experiencing symptoms, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Staff members were using protective equipment while test results were pending.

Both residents’ test results are considered presumptive positives and await confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Veterans Affairs said in a news release.

The residents remained in the care of the home at 222 E. Fifth Ave. as of Tuesday night. Two other residents are also awaiting test results, the department said.

“We know this is an incredibly uncertain time for the residents and their families,” said Lourdes E. Alvarado-Ramos, director of the Detpartment of Veterans Affairs, in a statement. “The veterans and their families we care for in our Homes are our greatest treasure and our agency and staff are understandably distraught by this news.”

All residents continue to be monitored for symptoms of COVID-19. The facility has also stopped taking new admissions.

Officials previously told The Spokesman-Review that employees were taking their own temperatures twice a day.
