Prosecutor determines officer who killed man at north Spokane Walmart was justified

The Spokane County Prosecutor's Office determined a police officer who shot and killed a man at a North Spokane Walmart last year was justified in his actions.Spokane police officer Karl Richardson shot 34-year-old Kerry Jones-Hilburg during a scuffle at the Walmart at 9200 N. Colton St. in December. According to a news release from the prosecutor's office, Jones-Hilburg was shoplifting at the store and another officer called Richardson for back-up.The two officers confronted Jones-Hilburg and tried to detain him, but he resisted, the release said. A taser was also deployed.During the altercation, Jones-Hilburg reached for a gun inside his jacket, the release said. Richardson yelled, "He's got a gun!" and shot him.The officers performed CPR but medics declared him dead at the scene.Investigators found a loaded semi-automatic pistol on Jones-Hilburg in a holster under his left arm, the release said.Autopsy results also concluded he had methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death.
