When Ed Shields interviewed for the job of head girls basketball coach at Reardan a year ago, he stressed the need to build a program that featured five players on the floor all at once and not a few players with a supporting cast. After Saturday night’s 55-42 victory over Toutle Lake in the girls State 2B championship game in the Spokane Arena, he assessed that first season.

Kwinn Hanson leads Northwest Christian to 2B boys title

Maybe Napavine could have beaten Kwinn Hanson before his Northwest Christian teammates got involved in the boys State 2B basketball championship, but there’s no question the Crusaders won their seventh state championship because of him. Hanson scored 21 points, including all 17 the Crusaders had in the first half, and anchored the defense in a 41-32 Northwest Christian victory over the Tigers Saturday night at the Arena.

After an absence that spanned almost a full generation, the maroon and grey of Reardan High School will play girls basketball on a State 2B Saturday night in March. Led by a lanky sophomore with a delicate touch from the top of the key, Reardan earned its first state title game appearance since 1988, racing past Darrington 58-24 Friday night in the Arena.
