Dynamic duo leads Colton boys to title

In the last game of his high school career, Jake Straughan went out a star. He also went out as Colton High School’s record holder for most points in a career (1,440) and led his Wildcats to a 59-46 win over the Pomeroy Pirates to grab the State 1B boys basketball championship.

It’s hard to imagine that Colton, in winning 43 straight games, struggled as mightily on offense as it did Saturday night. But they don’t give championship trophies based on style points and with five straight 1B titles on their resume, the Wildcats kept plugging away.

Tekoa-Oakesdale coach Dan Brown couldn’t be happier to face Colton again despite the fact his Nighthawks absorbed 49-, 40- and 34-point losses at the hands of the Wildcats this season. “If we play Colton again, the third day at state is the place to do it,” he said after his team pulled out a thrilling 61-59 win over Mount Vernon Christian in Friday’s first semifinal of the State 1B girls basketball tournament at the Arena.

Jake Straughan stood at midcourt, hands on hips, as his teammate walked off the court with five fouls with more than 3 minutes left to play in Colton’s semifinal battle with Shorewood Christian Friday evening. Dalton Patchen had stepped into the middle of the lane ahead of a driving Lion and was whistled for a blocking foul, and the player who had carried the Wildcats on his back in the quarterfinals took a seat.
