Sunnyside Christian defeats Neah Bay for eighth state title

The contrast in styles was stark. Neah Bay likes to get up and go. Sunnyside Christian prefers to take its time. Chalk up another for the tortoise over the hare. The Knights put on a first-half clinic on tempo control and held off the Red Devils 44-36 for their eighth state championship and fifth as a Class 1B school.

Colton wins fifth consecutive state girls basketball title

Paige Vincent represented the departing seniors and Jenna Moser let it be known that the cupboard won’t be empty at Colton. Moser, a junior guard, scored a game-high 20 points and senior guard Vincent added 19 Saturday afternoon as Colton captured its fifth consecutive State 1B girls basketball title with a 55-40 comeback win over Sunnyside Christian at the Arena.

St. George’s, Colfax meet again, this time for title

It seemed sort of preordained two Northeast 2B schools would meet in tonight’s State 2B boys basketball final. After all, they’ve been atop the classification all season. Defending champion Colfax did its part in the first semifinal Friday at the Arena, surviving a barrage of early 3-pointers from Wahkiakum to put the Mules away in the second half, 53-37.

NWC ‘planned’ for title matchup

Chanel Knight made the most of her second chance, giving Northwest Christian its fifth chance at Reardan and its first chance at the state championship. Knight rebounded her missed layup and made a layup at the buzzer Friday night as NWC (23-6) shocked Pe Ell 47-46 to cap semifinal night at the State 2B girls basketball tournament at the Arena.

The question was which team might be the biggest threat to the Wildcats (23-1), who made an opening statement at the Arena on Thursday by scoring the first 25 points in a 77-15 takedown of Taholah (11-7).
