​​Education: Graduated from Kent Meridian High School in 1968. Holds an associate degree from Concordia Lutheran College.

Work experience: Served un the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1971 to 1976. Worked as a police officer in King County from 1972 to 1997. Served as King County sheriff from 1997 to 2004.

Political experience: Served as King County sheriff from 1997 to 2004. Served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2005 to 2019.

Family: Married to Julie Reichert. Has three children.

Campaign finance: Raised more than $5.5 million as of Oct. 2, 2024, according to the state Public Disclosure Commission. Donors include the Cascade Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, National Safety Inc., NBA hall of famer John Stockton, and Washington Affordable Housing Council.
