Mrs O has asked me several times this summer why I planted 6 early girl tomato plants, 2 cherry tomato plants, and one variety of giant tomato plants. This week, she pointed out smugly that we now are inundated with ripe tomatoes. I simply went into the back yard and picked about 20 of them.

Board to pick new Zone 5 NIC trustee

The NIC Board of Trustees has scheduled a special board meeting for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the Edminster Student Union Building Driftwood Bay Room to interview candidates for the open seat in Trustee Zone 5 and to conduct a few related items of business.

Stepfather held in 17MO's death

A 17-month-old boy from Coeur d’Alene died Monday from head trauma he allegedly suffered at the hands of his stepfather. Joseph J. Davis, 31, is expected to be charged with homicide in Kootenai County. He is being held in the Kootenai County Jail on $1 million bond.

Avista may cut Idaho bills 

Avista’s Idaho customers could get a break on their natural gas bills, beginning Nov. 1. The Spokane-based utility filed a request with the Idaho Public Utilities Commission Monday for an adjustment in natural gas rates, based on lower wholesale gas prices.
