NAPERVILLE, Ill. – If playing top-ranked North Central in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs wasn’t enough for the Whitworth Pirates, they had to battle blistering cold.
PASADENA, Calif. – Stephen Behil scored 16 points as the Whitworth men’s basketball team rolled to an 87-44 victory over Caltech in a nonconference game on Saturday.
Bring on the second season. That is the collective stance of the Whitworth football players and coaches. The expanded 40-team NCAA Division III playoffs meant there was room for the Pirates (9-1).
It didn’t take long for running back Luis Salgado to catch the attention of Whitworth head coach Rod Sandberg. “The game was against Pacific, his freshman year,” Sandberg said.
Entering his 14th season with Whitworth, men’s basketball coach Damion Jablonski has become accustomed to the cycle of having to replace impact players every year.
Some coaches may shudder at the thought of having to rebuild nearly an entire roster. For Whitworth women’s basketball coach Kenny Love, he is eager for the opportunity.
Blair could have graduated after last year, and he considered leaving Whitworth. But he had some unfinished business. And is he ever glad he returned. He’s playing at a player of the year level. He’s completed 66.2% for 1,862 yards with 27 TDs and just two interceptions. He can break the career season record for TDs (29).
