People walk out of Dave Chappelle show after he speaks on Israel-Hamas conflict
Several people walked out of Dave Chappelle’s comedy show in Boston after he began discussing the war in Israel and Gaza, according to a report.
Chappelle, 50, was near the end of his set on Thursday at the TD Garden when he said college students shouldn’t lose job offers for supporting Palestinians, the Wall Street Journal reported.
When someone in the audience reportedly shouted “Shut up!” in response, Chappelle dove further into the conflict, according to the Journal.
Chappelle began by criticizing the Hamas attacks on Oct. 7 that started the latest war, but then ripped Israel for isolating Gaza and heavily bombing the small, densely populated territory, multiple attendees told the Journal.
At that point, cheers, boos and cries of “Free Palestine!” erupted from the crowd, the Journal reported. The commotion, combined with Chappelle’s criticism of the Israeli government, inspired many people to leave.
“We walked out and met up with many other Jews leaving the show. Never in my life have I felt so unsafe and so fearful of what I was witnessing,” one person posted on social media.
Chappelle bizarrely told the Journal he wasn’t even in Boston on Thursday, although the show was widely advertised and not canceled.
The popular comedian is no stranger to controversy. His jokes about transgender people in a 2021 Netflix special sparked intense online backlash, and several Netflix employees walked out in support of trans rights.
In 2022, Chappelle was attacked while performing at the Hollywood Bowl as part of a Netflix live event.
