Police: Felon arrested for aiming gun at passing cars

Spokane police arrested a felon last Tuesday who allegedly pointed a handgun at passing traffic and fled from officers, according to a Spokane Police Department news release.

Officers responded to a report of a man pointing a firearm at passing vehicles near Maxwell Avenue and Lincoln Street on Oct. 6 about 10 a.m. Two men walking in the area told one of the officers they saw the man holding a gun in his hand, according to a Spokane Police Department news release.

Officers found suspect Charles J. Reevis, 30, near Sharp Avenue and Wall Street. An officer saw Reevis moving his left hand under his jacket before Reevis reached under his coat and pulled out a handgun, the release said.

Reevis started walking faster before officers announced their presence and gave him commands to stop. Reevis moved behind two parked vehicles and an officer heard what sounded like metal hitting the ground. Reevis had taken off his jacket, tossed it onto the sidewalk and then lay in the middle of the roadway, the release said.

As officers approached him, Reevis jumped up and tried to run, police said. A short distance away he dropped to the ground again. Then he put his hand behind his back into his waistband. After a while, he showed his concealed hand and police did not use physical force, the release said.

Officers took Reevis into custody and found a handgun in the area where they first saw him, near the parked vehicles.

Reevis is a convicted felon and therefore cannot legally possess firearms. His felony convictions include assault with a dangerous weapon, second-degree burglary and second-degree malicious mischief, the release said.

Reevis was booked into the Spokane County Jail on suspicion of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the release.
