Spokane Valley shooting victim dies

The victim of a Sunday shooting in Spokane Valley has died.

The 33-year-old man, identified in court documents as Eric Klein, was shot in a home at 11313 East Seventh Avenue at about 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The man initially was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office learned of the man’s death on Thursday evening and announced it on Friday morning.

Brian Riley, 34, was charged with attempted murder earlier this week. He remains held in Spokane County Jail on $500,000 bond. It was not immediately clear on Friday if the charges against him will be amended in the wake of the victim’s death.

Riley is alleged to have entered the home on Seventh Avenue to sell unspecified items, according to police. The homeowner allowed Riley access to the second floor of the home before hearing a gunshot.

The homeowner investigated the gunshot and found the victim on the floor, according to court documents. In an effort to diffuse the situation, the homeowner convinced Riley to leave the house with him in a blue Audi. The two stopped at the Maverick Station on Argonne, where the homeowner went inside, alerted the clerk to call police and left through the back door, the sheriff’s sffice said.

The clerk flagged two deputies, who had arrived at the store coincidentally, to respond to the situation. They approached Riley, who drove off in the Audi and led police on a high-speed chase. The deputies, who were unaware of the shooting and full context of the situation, dropped their pursuit but remained close enough to keep the Audi in view.

Once aware of the shooting, deputies began their pursuit anew and found the Audi in an alley near Pacific Avenue and Myrtle Street. Riley was found nearby and arrested.
