Shop local, shop tasty: Stores, bakeries in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene make celebrating National Cookie Day easy

It’s not like you have to wait until the actual day to indulge, but if you want to celebrate National Cookie Day the right way, consider grabbing a cookie on Friday.

The holiday was born in 1987 when Matt Nader of San Francisco’s Blue Chip Cookie Co. declared Dec. 4 as the day to celebrate cookies in all their various flavors and forms.

Read on for a rundown of a handful of the many cookie shops and bakeries in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene. Shop local, shop tasty.

Breauxdoo Bakery

When it opened in May, Breauxdoo Bakery, a late-night cookie delivery service, set up shop in downtown Spokane. But beginning Wednesday, Breauxdoo will call 14109 E. Sprague Ave., Suite 7A-1, Spokane Valley home, sharing the space with Botanical Bites. As per the bakery’s Facebook page, customers can expect “an entirely new menu full of fun, exciting and BIGGER cookies.” Some of Breauxdoo’s previous offerings included Cherry Chip, Sugar Daddy and Chocolate Chip Caramel Crunch. Sweet Frostings Blissful Bakeshop

Though perhaps best-known for its wide variety of cupcakes, Sweet Frostings, with locations in downtown Spokane, NorthTown Mall, Spokane Valley Mall and Whitworth University, also can bake a mean batch of cookies. Stop by to order classics like chocolate chip, peanut butter and snickerdoodle, plus confetti and salted caramel cookies, holiday-themed cookies, birthday cookies and even cookie decorating kits. Boots Bakery and Lounge

The savory options aren’t lacking at Boots Bakery and Lounge, located at 24 W. Main Ave., but it’s difficult to resist grabbing a sweet treat or two after seeing the display cases. The vegan and gluten-free bakery sells breakfast cookies, no-bake cookies, ginger crinkle cookies and chocolate chip peanut butter cookies, plus cupcakes, fruit bars, coffee cakes, brownies, waffles and more. Made With Love BakeryMade With Love Bakery, located at 2023 W. Dean Ave., offers chocolate chip, chocolate butterscotch, oatmeal raisin and sugar cookies. But the sugary sweet options don’t stop there. Bars, scones (lemon blueberry, cranberry orange, maple pecan and orange chocolate chip), pies (triple berry, apple, pumpkin and pecan), cake, cupcakes, cheesecakes and pop tarts (triple berry and maple brown sugar cinnamon) also are available. Rind and Wheat

Can you go wrong with a Spokane pastry chef who has won cooking competitions each of the last three years – the Food Network’s ”Christmas Cookie Challenge: Modern Classics” in 2018, Hallmark Drama’s “Christmas Cookie Matchup” in 2019 and a national pizza contest this month? The newest addition to this list, Ricky Webster’s Rind and Wheat, at 1516 W. Mi Flavour Modern French Bakery

Mi Flavour Modern French Bakery, located at 3403 E. Sprague Ave., is a one-stop-shop for those with a sweet tooth. Mi Flavour offers tarts, pies, scones, mousse, pate a choux, cupcakes, macarons, bars, biscotti, cakes, brownies, confections, viennoiserie and, of course, cookies. Bear Paw Cookies

Coeur d’Alene’s Bear Paw Cookies, located at 2073 Main St. and 312 E. Sherman Ave., is likely your dogs’ favorite bakery. Where else can you get bear bones, aka cookies, for pups? For humans with a sweet tooth, Bear Paw has got you covered, too. The menu boasts everything from birthday cake-flavored cookies (Birthday Bear) and hot cocoa cookies (Cocoa Bear) to oatmeal raisin (Kodiak Bear) and a pumpkin cookie with cream cheese frosting (Pumpkin Bear). Crumbl Cookies

The Utah-born Crumbl Cookies has 130 locations across the country, including Coeur d’Alene. The bulk of the menu changes each week, but the signature milk chocolate chip cookie and chilled sugar cookie are always available. Last week, the CDA store, at 3524 N. Woops!

If “macarons” are the first thing that come to mind when hearing the word “cookies,” check out Woops! The Coeur d’Alene location at 119 N. Fourth St. offers macarons in flavors such as caramel fleur de sel, mint chocolate, birthday cake, coconut, cookies and cream, honey lavender, raspberry, lemon tart, Nutella, blueberry cheesecake and espresso macchiato. Bakery by the Lake

If you’re not in the mood for a full meal, you can still stop by Bakery by the Lake, 601 E. Front St. #104, in Coeur d’Alene for a sweet treat. The bakery’s treats menu includes a variety of cookies and muffins, plus cupcakes, a seven-layer bar and chocolate macaroons. The business also serves Love in the Light cake with vanilla frosting, almonds and a drizzle of pink frosting on top, and its counterpart, Kiss in the Dark cake, with chocolate frosting and a drizzle of white frosting on top.
