CdA man held on $2M bond in relation to carjacking, shooting death

A 36-year-old Coeur d’Alene man was involved in an armed carjacking and shooting death Thursday night that led to a pursuit and crash with an Idaho State Police trooper on Highway 97.
Daniel V. Stinson is being held in the Kootenai County Jail on a $2 million bond on suspicion of robbery and grand theft. He has not been formally identified by police as the suspect in the shooting.
Police say Noah Y. Peterson, 41, of Coeur d’Alene, died at the shooting scene in the area of North 3rd Street and East Roosevelt Avenue. Another resident, Jeremy S. Pardue, 49, also was shot but suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Kootenai Health before officers arrived.
Law enforcement agencies say Pardue and Peterson were shot two hours after Stinson hit a man over the head with a handgun and stole his Ford SUV and trailer on the 2900 block of West Fairway Drive around 5:30 p.m.
Stinson was reportedly high on methamphetamine and made statements about suicide by cop, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. Officers later found the victim’s phone near Huetter Road and the trailer in Post Falls.
The shooting was reported as police continued to search for the suspect and stolen vehicle.
ISP located Stinson in the stolen SUV heading east on Interstate 90 at about 7:40 p.m. and chased him south on Highway 97, which runs along the east side of Lake Coeur d’Alene, according to the sheriff’s office. A trooper briefly caused the SUV to spin out, but the pursuit continued farther down the highway.
The pursuit ended when the SUV rolled and an ISP sergeant rammed into the side of it, according to the sheriff’s office. The sergeant involved in the crash was treated for a back injury at the scene, and Stinson suffered minor abrasions.
Officers reported shots were fired during the pursuit but police have not said who fired, according to the sheriff’s office. The highway was blocked for more than two hours while the North Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigated.
Coeur d’Alene police detectives are investigating the shooting and robbery in the city, according to a news release.
Stinson was convicted in 2013 of forcing his way into a Coeur d’Alene apartment – along with another man – punching two other men and threatening them with a handgun. He served five years for aggravated assault and burglary.
