The Spokane Daily Chronicle ran a list of the student editors of The Gonzaga, the student publication of Gonzaga University.

The arts editor was Edward Crosby, better known today as Ted Crosby, brother of Bing Crosby. Ted Crosby went on to work for the Spokane Daily Chronicle and later became an executive with The Washington Water Power Corp.

From the crime beat: Gilbert Engebretsen, a Sandpoint lumber grader, went on a “pleasure ride” to Liberty Lake with Dorothy Duke and her friend “Billie” Howard.

He had $270 in cash in his pockets when he departed on that ride. When he returned to Spokane that night, the cash had somehow disappeared. So had his gold watch and chain.

Howard subsequently pled guilty to grand larceny and was sentenced to six months in prison. Duke pled not guilty — although she admitted she took the money.

Her trial for grand larceny was getting underway in Judge Hurn’s courtroom. She would eventually be found guilty.
