Big Sky roundup: Weber State runs past Cal Poly 41-24
Josh Davis ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Kris Jackson added two short scoring runs, powering Weber State to a 41-24 victory over Cal Poly on Saturday night in a nonconference matchup between Big Sky Conference teams in Ogden, Utah.
Jackson’s 1-yard run midway through the final quarter put the game away for Weber State.
Kevin Smith rushed for 114 yards on 13 carries as the Wildcats amassed 275 yards on the ground. Constantine completed 17 of 23 passes for 137 yards. Weber State outgained Cal Poly 457-346.
Cal Poly’s Hamler was 11-of-14 passing for 182 yards and he rushed for 53 yards and a score on 19 carries.
Montana 61, North Alabama 17: Dalton Sneed passed for a touchdown and ran for another, Marcus Knight added three rushing TDs, and the Grizzlies (2-0) pulled away in the second half to overwhelm the Lions (1-1) in Missoula.
Sneed completed 24 of 38 passes for 269 yards, including a 9-yard scoring strike to Matt Rensvold. Knight finished with 19 carries for 89 yards.
The Grizzlies trailed 17-16 at intermission as special teams miscues and a fumble by Sneed deep in North Alabama territory sparked the Lions. But then Sneed led Montana on three scoring drives before Griz return man Jerry Louis-McGee tore off a 74-yard punt return to make it 40-17 with 2:51 left in the third quarter.
Northern Iowa 34, Southern Utah 14: Will McElvain threw for three touchdowns as the Panthers (1-1) rolled past the Thunderbirds (0-2) in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
McElvain had 262 yards passing for Northern Iowa. Trevor Allen ran for 77 yards on 17 carries.
UC Davis 38, San Diego 35: Ulonzo Gilliam scored the winning touchdown with a short run and the Aggies (1-1) stopped San Diego at the goal line with 2 seconds left, defeating the Toreros (0-2) snapping San Diego’s 21-game home winning streak.
San Diego’s 21 games had been the longest active home winning streak in the FCS.
Portland State 70, Simon Fraser 7: Davis Alexander threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns as the Vikings (1-1) gave up one touchdown before thrashing the Division II Clan (0-1) in Portland.
Mataio Talalemotu caught six passes for 132 yards and a score and Davis Koetter grabbed four for 107 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings amassed 646 yards while limiting Simon Fraser to 113 total yards. The Clan had 178 yards passing but was held to a minus-65 yards rushing.
Montana State 38, Southeast Missouri State 17: Troy Andersen ran for two touchdowns and had two tackles for loss to lead the Bobcats (1-1) win over the Redhawks (1-1) in Bozeman.
After an error-filled first half, the Bobcats scored 28 points in the third quarter accumulating 240 yards in the process. Andersen ran for 102 yards on six carries.
Isaiah Ifanse had 114 yards rushing in the first half, but sat out the second half with an undisclosed injury.
