Voters in the Liberty School District in south Spokane County will see two names on their ballots, but only one candidate is eligible to hold the seat.

Andy Schenk resigned his position on the district’s board of directors in July, according to meeting minutes. His name still appears on the ballot, along with Mark Bullock, who previously served on the district’s board of directors after defeating Schenk in a 2011 election and running unopposed in 2015. Schenk was appointed to the seat by the board in July 2017.

Bullock confirmed Friday he’d filed in order to serve should Schenk be ineligible after moving out of the district. Schenk did not respond to requests for comments from The Spokesman-Review.

Schenk sold his home within the district limits in June, according to Spokane County property records, and his listed mailing address is now outside of the district’s boundaries. That would make him ineligible to hold the seat if elected.

Schenk filed for the seat May 16, and Bullock followed the day after. In order to have a name removed from the ballot, the candidate must have filed to withdraw by May 20.

The Liberty School District serves roughly 500 students at two buildings in Spangle on an operating budget this year of $8.1 million. One other school board member, Kynda Browning, is running unopposed on the November ballot.
