Thoughts on tolerance
As an avid reader I find that many times I overlook the trees while simply focusing on the forest, moving as fast as I can to gather as much information as possible in the shortest amount of time. Sometimes, an article or statement can stop me in my tracks and stimulate a more thoughtful process, as did the S-R article “Holocaust survivor shares experience,” Spokesman-Review, Nov. 8.
In the article it notes that Rabbi Yiroel Hahn, from Chabad of Spokane County, shared these words with the audience: “The world speaks about tolerance. I find tolerance to be an ugly word. You see, tolerance means that I can’t stand you but I’m going to tolerate you, so you tolerate me,” Hahn said. “Respect and acceptance is much greater than that.”
A powerful statement indeed that bears repeating and shouldn’t be be overlooked while surfing the forest. Thank you, Rabbi Hahn, for your thoughtful advice.
