Is this who we are now?
In the 2016 election, I really didn’t like either Clinton or Trump. When Donald Trump became president, my Democrat friends were stunned, angry and vocal. I suggested we needed to give him a chance to make things better and often said that it will be interesting to see how history treats him.
As time went by, some things did get better but other things got worse. And my Republican friends explained that he is not like any other president we have ever had. They are right.
The president is supposed to be our standard-bearer. He is the brightly lit living flag of the United States and what we represent to the world. Historically, and with very few lapses, the White House has been a place of respect and honor.
As I watch President Trump at press conferences, his foul-mouthed tirades, bullying tweets, nonsensical rants and ongoing ugly demeanor, I have to ask, is that who we are now? It is different. And the things he says, are they true? Are they necessary? Are they kind? The man in the White House is nothing like the man I hope that I am or would ever want to be.
