KPBX concert celebrates choral music with youth and women’s ensembles

Spokane Area Youth Choirs and Le Donne Choir, a group for women, will be celebrating choral music during the free KPBX Kids’ Concert on Saturday at Westminster Congregational United Church of Christ. The concert will be hosted by Vern Windham.

The program will include a wide range of music, said executive director Sarah Hopkins, including folk songs, contemporary gospel, church camp songs and music adapted from the Psalms.

“Some of it is more on the sacred side because we’re in this church that has hosted us for a number of years and celebrating its history and the history of singing in churches,” Hopkins said.

The three youth choirs performing have children ages 7 to 18 from around the region. (The organization also has a choir for 5- and 6-year-olds, but they won’t be performing at the Kids’ Concert.)

The choirs meet weekly to rehearse during the school year, with four concerts each year, plus special performances like this weekend’s. Hopkins says the concert is a chance to celebrate the human voice.

“What we’re trying to represent is the love of singing and the ability of singing to serve both singers and audience at all ages,” she said.

Coming up: The Spokane Area Youth Choirs’ holiday concert, “Open Hearts,” will be at 3 p.m. on Dec. 14 at Westminster. Tickets are $10 adults, $6 students, youth and seniors. For details, visit saychoirs.org.
