Seek the truth

Our country is sharply divided over which political party is telling the truth. Galileo Galilei, the Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer, once said: “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.” Iris Murdoch, a British novelist and philosopher, wrote: “We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.”

So the question is: With so many sources of media to choose from nowadays, how do we discover truth and find reality?

How do we sort out which media sources are reporting facts vs. ones that contain inaccurate fabricated information? Which sources give fair interpretations of the news vs. ones that broadcast extreme and unfair interpretations of the news? Which sources tell the whole story and which broadcast selective, incomplete stories or misleading information? And which sources are nonsense and damaging to public discourse?

I recently learned about a website (MediaBiasChart.com) that rates numerous media sources addressing each of these questions. Network news including: ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS/BBC are rated among the highest for the least amount of political bias and most reporting of facts. Good choices for facts with some political bias are CNNs Early Start, FOX News Sunday with Chris Wallace and MSNBCs First Look.

Winston Churchill once said: “The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is”. Seek, discover and speak the truth. Find reality – regardless of political party preference.

The Spokesman-Review invites original letters on local topics of public interest. Your letter must adhere to the following rules:

  • No more than 250 words
  • We reserve the right to reject letters that are not factually correct, racist or are written with malice.
  • We cannot accept more than one letter a month from the same writer.
  • With each letter, include your daytime phone number and street address.
  • The Spokesman-Review retains the nonexclusive right to archive and re-publish any material submitted for publication.
