Incumbents, Christie Wood win seats on Coeur d’Alene City Council

Two incumbents and one newcomer won seats on the Coeur d’Alene City Council Tuesday night.

While not all votes were counted Tuesday night, the winners were leading by large enough margins in all three races.

In the one open race, for City Council seat 1, preliminary results show Christie Wood leading with 63.7% of the vote, with about 3,900 votes counted in that race by 10:40 p.m. Tuesday night.

Council Seat 1

Wood will replace outgoing Coeur d’Alene City Councilman Ron Edinger, who is retiring after 50 years in city government, during which time he served as a council member and mayor.

Wood is a retired Coeur d’Alene Police Department spokeswoman who spent 26 years as a city police officer. She also served on the Coeur d’Alene school board, and currently is on the North Idaho College Board of Trustees and the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations.

Her opponent, Price, owns Spartacus Coins Bullion with her husband.

Council Seat 5

Incumbent Dan English had a strong showing in early results, topping his two opponents, Tom Morgan and Lacey Moen. English took 50.6% of the early count, challenger Tom Morgan took 20.7% and challenger Lacey Moen took 23.5%. Roger Huntman, who dropped out of the race earlier this year, took 5.2% of the vote.

English worked for decades as a licensed counselor, was the Kootenai County Clerk for 15 years and has served two terms on the council.

Council Seat 3

Seat 3 incumbent Dan Gookin had a big lead over Michael Pereira with 62.5% of the vote.

Gookin has been on the council for eight years and has described himself as a “champion for protecting and conserving historic Coeur d’Alene.” His opponent, Pereira, described Gookin as ineffective.

Pereira works as an environmental risk officer for Umpqua Bank and unsuccessfully ran for state Senate last year. In addition to eight years on the council, Gookin, unsuccessfully ran for Kootenai County clerk in 2018 and has written 20 titles in the “For Dummies” book series.
