Spokane Chiefs defenseman Ty Smith has been named Canadian Hockey League Defenseman of the Year, the CHL announced Saturday.

Smith scored seven goals with 62 assists during the regular season, his third with Spokane. He added a goal and eight assists during the Chiefs’ run to the WHL Western Conference Finals.

Smith led WHL defensemen in assists and was fourth in points despite playing 57 regular-season games. He posted 22 multi-point games and was an integral part of the league’s top power-play unit.

A native of Lloydminster, Alberta, Smith was the top bantam pick in 2015 and was selected 17th in the 2018 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils. He also competed for Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording three assists in five games.
