Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 6-5 win over the Red Sox

Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Boston Red Sox 6-5 Saturday night.

Right-hander Mike Leake (1-0) pitched six strong innings for the Mariners, allowing two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out seven.

The Mariners have won two of the first three games of the series, which concludes Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park.

Trailing 6-2, the Red Sox scored three times with two outs in the ninth on errors on three consecutive plays by rookie third baseman Dylan Moore. Right-hander Nick Rumbelow caught Xander Bogaerts looking at a called third strike with two runners on to end the game. … M’s closer Hunter Strickland, who gave up the go-ahead home run in the ninth inning of a 7-6 loss Friday night, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right lat strain. RHP David McKay was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and 3B Kyle Seager was transferred to the 60-day IL.

Our take from right field

Dylan Moore might not be long for the majors. The rookie utility infielder made his first start at third base Saturday night and made three errors in the ninth inning as the Red Sox nearly rallied from a four-run deficit. It was a bit surprising the M’s kept Moore over Kristopher Negron following spring training for the utility role. Negron showed late last season he’s capable of playing third, a necessity with Kyle Seager on the 60-day IL.
