College baseball: Gonzaga falls in series opener against Pepperdine
Cooper Chandler gave up two earned runs over seven innings, Reese Alexiades homered and Pepperdine beat visiting Gonzaga 4-2 in the first of a three-game West Coast Conference at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu, California, on Friday.
Alexiades’ two-run homer, his first of the season, put the Waves up 4-1 in the fourth inning.
The Zags (8-10, 2-2) loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Troy Johnston’s single plated a run to trim the deficit, but Mason Marenco grounded into a double play, ending the rally.
Mason Wells (0-1) went the distance for the Zags, allowing four earned runs on four hits, walking four and striking out one.
Chandler (2-1) gave up six hits and a walk with one strikeout for the Waves (11-7, 3-1). Christian Stoutland struck out two in two innings for the save.
(22) UC Irvine 4, Washington State 1: Andre Pallante tossed seven shutout innings and the Anteaters (13-4) beat the Cougars (6-14) in the first of a three-game nonconference series in Irvine, California.
Pallante (4-1) allowed two hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Mike Peabody went 2 for 4 with a three-run double in the third inning for UC Irvine.
Kyle Manzardo smacked an RBI double in the ninth for the Cougs’ lone run.
