Drag Queens vs kids
In watching the Drag Queen story, I never saw anything about age appropriateness. One of the drag queens quoted says they were just entertainment. Well, is all entertainment appropriate for all ages? Would you take a 5-year-old to an R-Rated movie? A PG-13 movie? Even some PG movies?
The discussion of age appropriateness in our society was tossed out decades ago. We seem to have this all-or-nothing attitude/approach to things … show them everything, or show them nothing. And, like so many issues today, we don’t want to talk about it, truly discussing the pros and cons. We only want to scream, “It’s my way or the highway”!
Life is complicated. And we don’t like complicated. That would require thought and discussion, and, heaven forbid, the C word … compromise. Our all-about-me society doesn’t do compromise. And how’s that working out for us?
As for the Drag Queen Story Hour, what age is appropriate? I don’t know, but I do believe we expose our children to way too much, way too early. And we need to have a serious discussion about it, not just yell, “I’m right and you’re wrong!”
