Leadership is more than listening

To be an effective mayor requires leadership, and leadership requires more than just listening. If political leadership was simply about listening to the people and carrying out the will of the majority, then we wouldn’t need leaders. Every issue could be decided by a referendum.

I contend that we do need leadership, and that a good leader brings her own policy positions to the table, and must be willing to defend her positions even when they are unpopular, or the audience is unfriendly. The best leaders have a clear vision and the ability to win the trust of the community by articulating that vision.
