Guns, rocks are different

Timothy Rasmussen attempts to build a case that a gun and a rock are, morally speaking, the same thing (“Don’t blame the rock,” June 9). His argument: both are “morally neutral,” having “no brain, no power, no ability to do anything by itself that could be right or wrong.” It’s the human, you see, that’s the problem.

He finishes his argument with, “We cannot solve the problem of violence by making illegal everything a person might use to be violent with.”

Let’s picture two scenarios. Scenario one: a person armed with a gun walks into a school to do harm. We know how that one ends. Scenario two: a person armed with a rock walks into a school to do harm. How do you think that one ends?

Those who can’t see the difference in how these two objects can be used, or why one deserves regulation over the other, bring to mind that old phrase about “a box of rocks.”
