Youth notebook: Jordan Rabe, Jailyn Strauss win Spokane Girls Fastpitch Softball Association Scholarship Awards

Jordan Rabe of Northwest Christian and Jailyn Strauss of Ferris, all-stars on the field and Spokane Scholars honorees off, were named 2019 recipients of the Spokane Girls Fastpitch Softball Association Scholarship Awards.

The 4.0 students and valedictorians of their senior classes who have played multiple years in the SGFSA will receive $1,500 each to use toward their college education.

Rabe, a three-time All-Northeast 2B League North first-team first baseman in softball and the 2018-19 All-NE2B MVP in basketball, will attend Biola University in Los Angeles and play basketball.

Strauss, who will be attending Whitworth, was an All-Greater Spokane League second-team selection as an infielder in slowpitch her senior year and All-GSL honorable mention in fastpitch as a sophomore.

Softball

Peyton Cushner (Mead) and Truh Merriman hit home runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a tie and Spokane-based Washington Elite went on to defeat Spokane Sliders 10-7 on Sunday and win the 18U Gold division championship of the SGFSA Summer Classic at the Merkel Complex.

Hope Bodak (Lakeland) and Maddie Saty (Central Valley), with a two-run triple, had key RBIs in a four-run Sliders’ fifth inning that tied the score after Elite had scored four in the fourth.

The tournament drew 65 teams in five age divisions.

Spokane Valley Impact defeated 406 Playmakers from Billings 22-13 to win the 16U Gold division while Moses Lake Fastpitch Club beat Rivercity Hornets-Willier from Edmonton, Alberta, for the 16U Silver title.

Spokane Diamonds-Nine defeated 406 Playmakers-Nieto 1-0 to win 14U Gold, and Montana Avalanche-Ries won 14U Silver over LC Blaze of Lewiston.

Spokane Epic 5-3; 10U Silver – Spokane Stealth-Routon d. Post Falls Blast 1-0.

Baseball

Walla Walla won three games on Sunday to wrap up a 5-0 tournament, capping it with a 3-1 victory over Pullman at Gonzaga Prep, to capture the championship of the Northside Clash AA Legion tournament that drew 12 teams.

• Gonzaga Prep defeated Mt. Spokane 11-1 at West Valley on Sunday to win the Single A Legion Kickoff Classic that had a field of 10 teams.
