Liberty for the privileged
The hardest part about skewering Stravo Lukos’s guest opinion concerning the virtues of a 51st state (“Strip away the noise: Liberty State solid,” May 5) is deciding where to start. Scarcely have I seen writing so rich with utter nonsense. The author, along with Rep. Matt Shea, claims to be able to work with all kinds of people, a necessary skill for moving toward a “land of communities that work together.” Yet he is unable to associate with the kind of people living in Western Washington because they all stereotypically consider East Siders “hicks.” Apparently, West Siders are a unique race with which not even experts can work! While I have no trouble with them, my kind will obviously be displaced from Liberty state, regardless of roots and geographic preferences.
The expectation is that all residents will magically be able to agree on some undisclosed “common constructive vision” that will eliminate all “bickering.” The irony is that Americans have been naively trying to do this without success since the first colonists displaced the natives. Liberty only for the privileged!
Even though the obsolete Articles of Confederation do not declare us a Christian nation, they do present a clearer image than the Constitution (good luck dealing with Article IV, Section 3) of all armaments being well secured in “public stores.” Governor Shea need not be a theocrat (divinely guided) to enforce his brand of Christianity. I shudder to think of how his “rod of justice” would be applied to my “misbehavior” as an atheist. Alas, the 250 word limit!
