Reader photo: Where the buffalo sleep
Mike Gass took this photo of a resting American bison in the National Bison Range, a wildlife refuge north of Missoula. In the background are the snow-covered Mission Mountains.
The 18,500-acre National Bison Range is run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Opened in 1908, it’s one of the oldest refuges in the U.S. and is home to between 350 and 500 American bison in addition to elk, deer, antelope and bighorn sheep.
