Teachers, look further than Spokane

I read with interest Patrick Kern’s rant regarding teacher layoffs (“Teacher layoffs are an outrage,” May 24) and his young friend who quoted “the odds of her getting hired in the Spokane school system anytime soon.”

Instead of researching odds, could she possibly start researching the outlying school districts that aren’t located within an easy fifteen-minute commute? There are dozens and many need teachers. She could look north, west and south, and then, look east to Idaho, where you get twice the work for half the pay.

I taught in Coeur d’Alene School District for a year and many members of our faculty lived in Spokane. They gained valuable teaching and classroom management experience, enhanced their careers professionally, and many, eventually, found jobs in Spokane’s District 81.

Mr. Kern, please share with your young friend that her job is out there and for her to keep looking. If she really wants to teach, nothing will stop her.
