Burglars steal gun from nightstand as victim slept; deputies use stun gun to arrest suspect

Deputies tracked down a man and woman after they allegedly broke into a Spokane Valley home and stole a gun from a nightstand next to the sleeping victim.

Casey R. Gillette, 35, and Melissa A. Buchheit, 33, are suspected of breaking into the house on the 10600 block of East Baldwin Avenue late Saturday or early Sunday, according to a news release from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say they stole a loaded Glock .40-caliber pistol from the nightstand, along with the victim’s wallet and his 2015 Jeep Cherokee from the garage.

The victim alerted his bank of the theft, and his bank told him his stolen credit card was used at a Maverick gas station on East Montgomery Drive.

Deputies went to the Maverick gas station and looked at surveillance footage. They identified Gillette and Buchheit on the footage through the red Honda Accord they were driving whenusing the stolen credit card, according to a news release. The Honda was registered to Gillette.

Deputies found the stolen Jeep at a nearby Motel 6. The suspects and two others were walking outside of the motel when deputies approached them.

All except Gillette obeyed orders to show their hands. Gillette allegedly threw the backpack toward the roof, but it hit and broke a glass window before falling back to the ground. Deputies used a stun gun on Gillette and handcuffed all four people.

Gillette is charged with burglary, theft of a firearm and theft of a car. A Spokane County Superior Court judge set his bond at $15,000.

Buchheit was charged with burglary and theft of a car. She was released without bond, according to the news release.
