Respect hasn’t been earned

A letter to the editor on May 25 (Penney Thompson, “Trump has kept his word”), asked us to “treat the man with respect” and to ask ourselves if we are better or worse off with Trump in office.

Trump has done absolutely nothing to earn my respect. I cannot respect a pouting bully who lies constantly and throws tantrums. His behavior has repeatedly embarrassed me. He is a president whose tweets hurt and degrade others. He has bragged about groping women. Respect? What a joke!

Our country is not better off with Trump, in my opinion. He appropriated $2.5 billion from Defense Department counterdrug activities (“Trump blocked from funding wall…” S-R, May 25) while our country struggles with an opioid crises. He has provoked world leaders, with Iran being the latest. He is ruining our reputation and putting us at greater risk. No, we’re not better off in many ways. I could list numerous examples but it would take a whole page of the newspaper!

I cannot respect a person who has no respect for others and is making our country worse not “great.” I am ashamed to say he is our president. But hey, if you can respect this joke of a president, more power to you.
