Where do they stand?

Homelessness has been a hot topic for our local Spokane candidates as the August 6 primary election day approaches. Many causes have been suggested, but one factor is there simply are not enough low cost places available for low income individuals and families.

Our housing shortage will get even worse as a consequence of global warming. Glaciers are melting at an ever faster rate all over the world. People living in flooded coastal areas need to get to higher ground, and many will move to cities like Spokane.

This future puts even more pressure on Spokane leaders to develop reasonable plans to accommodate these newcomers. We need to elect leaders who are aware of the realities of the climate crisis as they plan for a sustainable future for Spokane. It is especially important that we choose wise people who can think outside the box while also being compassionate in their dealings with others.

Fortunately most of our current City Council members have already portrayed these characteristics. Please do a Google search, “Spokane City Council Candidates’ views on Climate Change.” You can also look up their views on homelessness. Similarly look up mayoral candidates and District 81 school board candidates.
