A woman was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday afternoon in the Wandermere area north of Spokane, and authorities were still searching for one or more assailants Sunday evening.

The shooting was reported at about 4:30 p.m. on Wandermere Road near Elto Avenue, a few blocks from the Wandermere Golf Course.

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said deputies arrived about three minutes after the call but could not find the assailant’s vehicle, which was described as a red truck or SUV.

Citing “initial and limited information provided at the scene,” the sheriff’s office said the victim was driving her own vehicle with two adult passengers when someone in the truck or SUV opened fire on them.

She stopped her car after being struck and was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

The assailant’s vehicle was last seen fleeing south on Wandermere Road, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said detectives were working to identify suspects and sort out the events that led to the shooting.

Wandermere Road remained closed Sunday evening between Elto Avenue and Glencrest Drive.

The sheriff’s office said the county medical examiner’s office would release the victim’s identity.

The sheriff’s office said anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information should call Detective Kirk Keyser at (509) 477-6611.
