Pinch-hitter Tommy Edman hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a 5-2 victory against the host Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals scored all five of their runs in the ninth to win for just the second time in their past seven games. Right-hander John Brebbia (2-3) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, striking out six, to get the victory.

Mariners right-hander Mike Leake, who played for the Cardinals in 2016-17, pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just five hits. The right-hander didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven.

Right-hander Austin Adams, who earned his first major-league victory in Wednesday’s series opener, got out of the eighth and went back out for the ninth in a bid for his first career save. But Jose Martinez led off the inning by grounding a single into right field and, an out later, Paul Goldschmidt grounded a single to left and Tyler O’Neill walked to load the bases.

Dexter Fowler greeted left-hander Roenis Elias with a line-drive single to right to thwart the shutout bid and Yadier Molina lined a sacrifice fly to left to tie the score at 2-2.

Edman, batting for Kolten Wong, hit a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left-center field to put the Cardinals ahead.

Dylan Moore hit a home run for the Mariners, who have lost five of their past six games.

Of note

The field for the Home Run Derby at next week’s All-Star Game in Cleveland was set and M’s slugger Daniel Vogelbach will not be a participant. Houston’s Alex Bregman and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Joc Pederson were the final two selections for the eight-man field, joining Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich, the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso, Pittsburgh’s Josh Bell, Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr., Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the host Indians’ Carlos Santana.

By the numbers

90: The Mariners have either hit or allowed a home run in all 90 of their games, a major-league record for a single season. The previous mark of 69 games was done three times.

Our take from Right Field

It’s too bad the fans in Cleveland won’t be seeing any “Vogelbombs” in the Home Run Derby. Vogelbach, who finished second in the Triple-A Derby a couple of years ago, would have been a worthy participant.

Up next

The M’s conclude their three-game interleague series against St. Louis at 1:10 p.m. Thursday at T-Mobile Park. M’s LHP Tommy Milone (1-2, 2.95 ERA) is scheduled to take over after a reliever is used as an opener. The Cardinals are set to start RHP Michael Wacha (5-4, 5.30).
