Recap and highlights: Seven players score in double figures to lead No. 5 Gonzaga past Portland 89-66
PORTLAND – Seven players scored in double figures, led by Rui Hachimura’s 17-point output, as No. 5 Gonzaga downed Portland 89-66 on Saturday at the Chiles Center.
Zach Norvell Jr. (14 points), Josh Perkins (11), Brandon Clarke (11), (Corey Kispert (11), Geno Crandall (10) and Killian Tillie (10) all finished in double figures for the Bulldogs (18-2, 5-0 West Coast Conference).
Hachimura came up just short of a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds. Perkins dished out a team-best seven assists for GU.
Marcus Shaver Jr. paced Portland (7-13, 0-5) with 18 points.
The Bulldogs shot 50 percent from the floor and 35.5 percent from deep, while UP shot 47.8 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from 3-point range.
Gonzaga outrebounded the Pilots 41-22 and outscored Portland 38-28 in the paint. GU finished with just eight turnovers and 26 assists, while Portland had 12 turnovers and 13 assists.
The Bulldogs play just one game next week, a trip to Santa Clara on Thursday (8 p.m., SWX)
Second half
Final – Gonzaga 89, Portland 66: Balance the name of the game for Gonzaga in this one as seven players reach double figures. Rui Hachimura leads the way with 17 points.
Portland cut the GU lead to 12 early in the second half, but the Zags responded nicely and built the lead back up near 20 for the rest of the contest.
Nice night for Portland’s Marcus Shaver Jr. with 18 points, but the Pilots don’t have enough scorers around him to get their first WCC win of the season.
2:55 – Gonzaga 79, Portland 61: Fantastic passing by the Zags leads to a fancy up-and-under layup for Geno Crandall to get to double figures with 10 points.
Josh Perkins and Killian Tillie also joins the double-figures party with 11 and 10 points respectively. Balanced offense from GU as five players are in double figures.
Zags now shooting 48.4 percent overall for the game and have scored 36 points in the paint.
5:45 – Gonzaga 72, Portland 54: Bulldogs and Pilots trade triples as Killian Tillie connects from deep, followed by Marcus Shaver Jr. for Portland.
Tillie now at eight points, five assists and four rebounds for GU, while Shaver leads UP with 16 points.
Geno Crandall also getting it doing on offense with eight quick points.
Fouls adding up for GU as Corey Kispert, Brandon Clarke and Tillie all have four.
Zags now shooting 47.6 percent overall this half and 36.4 percent from deep. Just one GU turnover this half as well, along with 10 assists
11:41 – Gonzaga 57, Portland 39: Corey Kispert off to the bench after picking up his fourth foul. He’s into double figures as well with 11 points.
Josh Perkins tries to get GU’s energy back up with a nifty dish to Rui Hachimura, who slams it home to get to 17 points. Perkins follows up the dime with a 3-pointer and an alley-oop to Brandon Clarke.
Perkins up to eight points, while Clarke is the third Zag into double figures with 10 points.
Pace also slowing as the whistles are getting a little more action this half. Both teams nearing the bonus already.
16:45 – Gonzaga 45, Portland 33: Little run from Portland out of the break cuts the Gonzaga lead 12 points as the Zags struggle to get much to fall on offense.
Rui Hachimura leading the way with 15 points for the Bulldogs. Both teams hovering around 45 percent shooting, but the Zags have put up 14 more shots than the Pilots.
First half
Halftime – Gonzaga 41, Portland 26: Quick second foul call on Killian Tillie about the only thing that went wrong for the Zags in the opening 20 minutes.
Rui Hachimura leading the way with 11 points, while Corey Kispert finishes with eight points. Zach Norvell Jr. up to six points and a team-high five rebounds.
GU shooting 47.2 percent from the floor and 26.7 percent from deep, while Portland is shooting 40 percent overall and 18.2 percent from 3-point range.
GU outrebounding the Pilots 22-12 and outscoring Portland 24-14 in the paint. Zags with six turnovers to UP’s eight.
Marcus Shaver Jr. leads Portland with nine points.
3:53 – Gonzaga 38, Portland 23: Rui Hachimura the first GU player into double figures with 11 points. Zags now hold a 22 to 14 advantage on points in the paint.
Portland not able to sleep on GU from outside either as Zach Norvell Jr. gets on the board with a corner triple off a Josh Perkins assist. GU up to 12 assists on its 16 makes.
6:40 – Gonzaga 31, Portland 17: Both teams go on a bit of a scoring spree out of the media timeout with a combined five-straight makes before a Josh Perkins missed layup.
Rui Hachimura getting into the scoring action with an easy take to the bucket while getting fouled. The junior from Japan hits the free throw to convert the 3-point play. He’s up to nine points.
Zags now shooting 54.2 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from deep. GU also limiting Portland to tough looks, but the Pilots are shooting the ball better than they have for most of the WCC slate.
GU really starting to pull away though as Perkins jumps a Portland passing lane for a steal and score to get up to five points.
10:58 – Gonzaga 18, Portland 9: Corey Kispert gets it going for the Bulldogs. The sophomore wing up to eight points on 3 of 4 shooting and a pair of 3-pointers.
Killian Tillie also with a strong could of minutes off GU’s bench with five points, including a strong take to the basket for a 3-point play.
Rui Hachimura and Zach Norvell Jr. have yet to get it going for the Zags, but the rest of the lineup has filled in nicely.
Once again, GU is dominating in the paint, outscoring the Pilots 8-2 early on. Zags also taking care of the ball with only two turnovers.
15:18 – Gonzaga 7, Portland 6: Portland opens up in a 2-3 defensive zone, but the Zags move the ball well to find Josh Perkins for an open 3-pointer.
Portland not afraid to fire from deep either though as the Pilots connect on a pair of early triples.
GU hasn’t quite found its shooting touch in the cozy confines of the Chiles Center. Zags are 3 of 8 from the floor. Zags making up for the misses with some good work on the offensive glass, as Brandon Clarke and Corey Kispert each get put-back buckets after a board.
