Shopko to close North Spokane, Spokane Valley and Pullman stores

Shopko will close two additional stores in the Spokane area and its Pullman store as the Wisconsin-based retailer seeks to reorganize and emerge from bankruptcy.

The North Spokane Shopko at 9520 N. Newport Highway will close after May 5, according to the company.

The Spokane Valley store at 13414 E. Sprague Ave. will close after May 12.

The Pullman store will close after April 14.

As previously announced, Shopko’s South Hill store will close in early March. After the closures, no Shopkos will remain in Spokane County.

In Idaho, the Bonners Ferry store will close in mid-May, but the Coeur d’Alene store will remain open.

Shopko filed for Chapter 11 reorganization under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in mid-January, citing “excess debt and ongoing competitive pressures” in a news release.

Shopko announced plans in December to close 39 stores in 14 states. The additional closures announced this week bring the total store closures to more than 250.

Other Shopko locations slated for closure in Washington are: Kennewick, Lacey, Yakima, Prosser, Wenatchee, Walla Walla and Quincy. In Idaho, the Orofino store is on the closure list.

Founded in 1962, Shopko operates 363 stores in 24 states in the Midwest, West and Pacific Northwest, according to the company’s website. That number includes 134 Shopko stores and 176 Shopko Hometown locations, which serve smaller communities. The company also operates five Shopko Pharmacies and five Shopko Express RX stores.
