Once a Christian nation
In 1608 the Puritans emigrated to Holland, fleeing the persecution of England’s King James, for their simple forms of Christian worship. After 12 years in Holland, on July 22, 1620, the Puritans set sail for the new world on the Mayflower. On the 22nd of December, 1620, they set foot on Plymouth Rock.
Over the next 150 plus years, the colonists thanked God for their new home. They clawed out a living until King George decreed new taxes which inflamed the colonists, since they had no representation in the mother country of England. They listed 27 specific grievances of King George.
After the War of Independence, a new, sovereign nation was born. Newly elected, President George Washington bowed to kiss a page of the Bible while his hand was on it and said, “I swear, so help me God.” I challenge subscribers to read the preamble of the State of Washington Constitution as well as the other states. Almost all thank God for our liberty and rights.
Thomas Jefferson warned us: “Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep forever.”
