Librarians are vital

My heart breaks knowing that Spokane Public Schools has eliminated librarians, reducing the number of safe adults to help students navigate the world and encourage a love of learning.

The library is the soil in the garden of learning. Without librarians, the potential of significant growth drastically diminishes. Unbeknownst to many, librarians don’t just check out books. Librarians help children fall in love with learning, encourage students to dig deeper into curriculum, and teach them how to evaluate information. Librarians know what’s being taught in each subject and provide resources for students and teachers.

Libraries are a safe place for so many children and one of the only spaces everyone can find representation no matter gender, race, sexuality, religion, etc. The library is a place full of magic and hope where students who struggle socially find solace. Students whose home lives are in shambles crave the serenity only a library provides and learn to love the way a book comes alive. Librarians help students thrive by assisting them in their search for their next adventure while simultaneously teaching them how to navigate life.

Without librarians, students are losing an opportunity to gain the tools needed to expand their critical thinking skills. By eliminating librarians, I fear we are aiding in creating a generation of children who will turn into sheep at a time when we desperately need more lions.

I really hope the loss of librarians is only temporary.
