County commissioners approve no shooting area change for gun club application

The Spokane Gun Club is one step closer to a new location after Spokane County Commissioners unanimously approved a zone change for the club’s proposed site at their Tuesday night meeting.

Every commissioner voted to change the proposed gun club site from a no-shooting area to allow shooting. The gun club needed a new site after selling it’s former 99-acre location to the Central Valley School District last year. The new area, west of Fairchild Air Force Base, has been a no-shooting area since 1993. The site is more than 400 acres.

Commissioner Al French said he was contacted by constituents who were concerned the new shooting range could impact the surrounding neighborhood. He said the community could voice their concerns to the hearing examiner during the next phase of the process.

Before the gun club can continue in the process of opening a shooting range, it will have to apply for a conditional use permit.
