Spokane Chiefs release Bailey Brkin and Kaden Hanas, both 20-year-olds
With training camp and the 2019-20 season approaching, the Spokane Chiefs have released two 20-year-old players, goaltender Bailey Brkin and forward Kaden Hanas, to give the team some overage flexibility. Both cleared Western Hockey League waivers and are free agents.
Brkin appeared in 52 regular-season games during the 2018-19 campaign with a 2.75 goals-against average and started all 15 of the Chiefs’ playoff games with a 2.55 GAA. The Chiefs addressed their goaltending by acquiring Czech goalie Lukas Parik in the import draft.
Hanas was signed midway through the 2018-19 season and played in 21 regular-season and 15 playoff games.
The moves leave Spokane with five 1999-born players eligible to return. WHL teams are allowed a maximum three overage players and must be down to that number by Oct. 16.
• The Chiefs announced their training camp teams will carry the names of three former standout players as a way to honor Tyler Johnson (2007-11), a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning; Derek Ryan (2003-07), with the Calgary Flames; and Edmonton Oilers prospect Kailer Yamamoto (2014-18).
Team Johnson will wear blue, Team Ryan red and team Yamamoto white during camp Thursday through Saturday. Thursday’s camp games will pit Ryan vs. Johnson at 1 p.m. and Ryan vs. Yamamoto at 3:45. On Friday, it’s Yamamoto vs. Ryan at noon and Yamamoto vs. Johnson at 3. Saturday’s schedule is Johnson vs. Yamamoto at noon and Johnson vs. Ryan at 2:45.
The roster will be cut down for the annual Red-White game in the Arena at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Aug. 25). All camp ice sessions, including the Red-White game, are free and open to the public.
