Toby Keith offers history lesson in ‘That’s Country Bro’
Sit down, kids: Toby Keith has a history lesson to share.
In his new single “That’s Country Bro,” Keith takes a few moments to teach listeners about “the roots and the boots/And the rhinestone suits/That started this rodeo.”
Keith mentions a baker’s dozen of country legends in the first verse: Jimmy Rogers, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, Kitty Wells and “ole’ Hank Snow.”
Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle and George Trait are mentioned later in the song, which Keith released in May.
Classic TV shows and movies like “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Smokey and the Bandit” and “Glen Campbell’s Goodtime Hour” also receive a nod from Keith.
“When I got to town in ’91, I knew everybody from Jimmie Rodgers forward,” Keith told the (Oklahoma City) Leader-Telegram in July. “It was like this was my passion. You shouldn’t be here doing this if you don’t know who held the foundation.”
