Out of Right Field: Recap, takeaways from the Mariners’ 14-1 loss to the Texas Rangers

Hunter Pence went 3 for 5 with a double, home run and four RBIs as the Texas Rangers routed the Mariners for the second consecutive day, beating them 14-1 Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park.

Elvis Andrus, Logan Forsythe and Shin-Soo Choo also homered for the Rangers, who won 15-1 Saturday night.

Rangers right-hander Lance Lynn (3-2) allowed one run on five hits in seven innings, with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Mariners starter Erik Swanson (0-3), who was selected by the Rangers in the eighth round of the 2013 draft, struggled in his third major-league start. Swanson, filling in for the injured Wade LeBlanc, allowed nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits in four innings, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Trailing 5-0, the Mariners’ lone run came in the fourth inning. Tim Beckham led off with a double, advanced to third on a flyout by Omar Narvaez and scored on a groundout by Ryon Healy.

Of note

RHP Shawn Armstong, who was designated for assignment by the M’s on Friday, was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. Armstrong was 0-1 with a 14.73 ERA in four relief appearances this season.

By the numbers

27: The difference in the number of hits – 37-10 – between the Rangers and M’s in the two blowouts this weekend. The Rangers had a 17-7 edge Sunday after a 20-3 advantage Saturday.

The lone question after the Rangers took a 9-1 lead midway through the game was whether the M’s would use a position player to close for the second consecutive day. Disappointingly, it didn’t happen. Plus, the M’s made four more errors.
