Education notebook: East Valley Middle School teacher honored
An East Valley Middle School ELA teacher was honored in front of representatives from 22 countries during the International Conference on Education, Diversity and Respect in Seattle in August.
Julie Scott received an award for Outstanding Commitment and Devotion to the Welfare of Children. She spoke about her work with the Janusz Korczak Association, an organization that promotes the legacy of Korczak, whose work with Polish and Jewish orphans in Warsaw, Poland, from 1912 to 1942 focused on universal humanism and progressive teaching methods. He advocated for children’s rights.
Scott said she teaches the work of the association’s founder, artist and poet Mariola Stahlberg in her classes. Some of her students’ artwork and poetry were displayed at the conference.
Elementary school principal of year named
Spokane Elementary School Principals Association presented Sue Unruh of Arlington Elementary School with the Dick Stannard Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year award.
Unruh was selected for her exemplary leadership as principal to a school with more than 600 students, teachers and staff. She has provided teachers with training for STEM focus and coordinated with staff to allocate resources for student’s social and emotional growth.
CVSD middle school boundary review focus of open house
Central Valley School District will host a Middle School Boundary Review Open House where community members are welcome to get information and give input on the second draft of the review by the Middle School Boundary Committee. Drop in anytime between 6-8 p.m. Sept. 26 at Evergreen Middle School commons, 14221 E. 16th Ave., Spokane Valley.
Midway Elementary to reveal remodel at open house
The Mead community is invited to an open house at Midway Elementary School, 821 E. Midway Road., Colbert, today to view the new renovations. The open house is from 6-7:30 p.m. with a dedication ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
