Disrespect disgraced Spokane
I felt it was an honor for our city to have Vice President Pence come here. The plans of an activist group to protest with their disgraceful balloon and negative signs was not the welcome he deserved. Many want Spokane to be known as a city that demonstrates hospitality to all. What happened is the opposite of who we are! I believe our vice president deserves to be treated with respect as a person and as leader in our country, no matter what your political views are.
I’ve been contemplating our role as citizens with the privilege of voting for candidates in elections. I vote for the one who best represents my values and beliefs. I believe we show our support for them by our vote, and helping their campaign with our time or money. Others believe their role is to resist and obstruct the opponent: destroying signs, attending events to “shout down” their speeches, and yelling at their supporters who attend events, even at a private home. Sadly, there are elected leaders who encourage protest, anger and rudeness to those we disagree with rather than setting an example of civility in treating others with respect.
