Ronald McDonald House Charities of Spokane is relocating downtown’s heart sculptures to more secure locations following vandalism that damaged several of the pieces.

Some of the hearts will be placed in downtown Spokane buildings and others will go to locations on the South Hill, Mike Forness, executive director of the nonprofit, said during a news conference Tuesday.

The heart sculptures were installed throughout downtown as part of a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House.

Five heart sculptures were vandalized earlier this month, leading to one arrest. Some were pushed over, and some were bashed with a stick. Four of the five are able to be repaired.

Spokane Veteran’s Memorial Arena, Spokane Convention Center, River Park Square and the Davenport hotels are among the new homes for the 24 hearts.

“We feel that we really need to move these hearts, these pieces of art, that are there to support the families of the Ronald McDonald House, and protect these artists’ work,” Forness said.

The hearts will be sold at a gala on March 1 to raise money for the charity.
