Chiefs storm back for overtime road victory over Seattle
KENT, Wash. – Luke Toporowski scored with a minute left in overtime, and the Spokane Chiefs rallied late to stun the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-2 Tuesday in Western Hockey League play at ShoWare Center.
Ty Smith had a hand in all three Chiefs (10-7-1-2, 23 points) goals, as he set up Ethan McIndoe 7:05 into the third period on a power play to put the visitors on the board. Spokane has scored on the power play in 13 consecutive games. Smith then netted the tying goal with 3:10 remaining and added a secondary assist on Toporowski’s winner.
Smith extended his points streak to seven games. He leads all WHL defensemen with 28 points (three goals, 25 assists).
Eli Zummack added a pair of assists for Spokane, which earned its first win of the season when trailing after two periods. The team was 0-5 when behind after two periods.
Payton Mount scored 3:36 into the game and Zack Andrusiak added another at the 3:36 mark of the second to put the T-birds (7-8-3-0, 17 points) in front. It could have been worse for Spokane, but Seattle missed a penalty shot at the 16:38 mark of the second.
The Chiefs’ Dawson Weatherill notched a season-high 37 saves on 39 shots for his second consecutive win.
Spokane and Seattle will face off again Friday at the Arena at 7:05 p.m.
